RFID - Gaining the benefits?
To gain the benefits anticipated from the use of RF-ID, fully automatic transactions will be more widespread throughout the supply chain, and RF tags will need to be read more often and more accurately than is the case for today’s traded unit barcodes.
Today, despite the maturity of barcodes, packaging and coding errors remain a daily occurrence, with Tesco making at least one product withdrawal per day, and Sainsbury suffering over 100,000 barcode read failures per week, at one depot alone.
As RF-ID brings an increasing reliance on accurate product identification, the current errors in the management and application of package coding data must be eliminated; the penalties from retailers for non-compliance are predicted to increase.
Claricom’s Package Coding Management software has been eliminating coding errors at many leading grocery goods producers for over 5 years. This suite of modular software extends to managing the data required for EPC compliant RF tags and the associated data that is unique to each product, such as Use By dates and other traceability information, compliant with food traceability legislation.
